The Worst Date (Chapter 5)

Debra ran all the way through the starless night and safely made it home. When she arrived, the lights were off so no one was home. It was the perfect time for her to sit on the couch in the living room and cry softly in her hands. She couldn't believe that such a night happened. She thought that she was doing everything but it ended up with bad results. She didn't blame Lizzie; she knew that she was only trying to help. But Debra knew that she would have embarrassed herself anyway. She just didn't want to believe it because she liked Drake and wanted to go on that date with him. Now she supposes that Drake does not feel the same way for her, especially not after that night.
Suddenly, she heard the doorbell ring. She wasn't going to ignore it so she wiped her inky tears and calmed down. She got up from the couch and walked over to the door. She opened it and saw her friend, Kyle, standing there with a smile and a yellow composition notebook in his hand.
"Hey, Debra," he said. "I've seen that you forgot your notebook in English and I just wanted to give it back to you."
"I forgot it?" she inquired.
"Alright, I stole it," Kyle confessed, walking into the house. "I just wanted an excuse to come over to your house and talk to you."
Debra closed the door. "Kyle, we're friends. You can always talk to me."
"What's the matter? You look terrible."
Debra began to tear up again. "I know!"
"I-I-I didn't mean it that way. I meant that you look like you've been crying."
"Yeah." Debra walked over to the couch and sat down. "I was crying right before you got here."
Kyle sat right next to her. "What happened, Debra?"
"Well, I was on this date with Drake. And that was like my first major date. I really liked him so I tried to be flirty and playful and fun. But..." Tears ran down her cheeks as she got all choked up. "... everything went wrong and I could tell that he wasn't feeling me. So I embarrassed myself and fell out of my seat and got water dumped all over me. And when things couldn't get much worse, I farted!"
"You farted?"
"I ate some broccoli! And now, all Drake can remember is the worst date of his life because his date made a fool out of herself and farted in front of him."
"Aw, I'm sorry, Debra."
"He hates me now."
"He doesn't hate you."
"Why wouldn't he? I'm just an embarrassment." She rested her face in her palms.
"No, you're not. You're cool."
"Oh, please."
"You are. You're cool; you're chill; you're funny. Any guy would be lucky to be with you. If Drake doesn't like you, it's his loss. He's missing out on a sweet, special girl and that's you."
Debra sniffled, calming down and looking up at Kyle. "You think so?"
"I know so."
"Thanks, Kyle. You're a good friend."
Kyle opened his arms to insinuate a hug. Debra accepted the invitation and embraced Kyle. They hugged for half a minute until they loosened the hug. Their fingers were intertwined on each other's backs and their faces were inches away. Their smiles faded and their eyes locked. And at the same time, they leaned towards each other and pressed their lips together. While tangled up in each other's clutch, the doorbell rang. They tried to ignore it until the bell rang a third time. Debra released herself from Kyle and said:
"I got to get that."
"Can you get it later?"
"They'll be gone."
"Good."
Debra rolled her eyes and got up. She walked over to the door and opened it. Her eyes surely were open as well when she saw Drake right at the door.
"Drake," she said.
Kyle heard her say his name.
"Hi, Debra," Drake said. "I know I've said this a thousand times tonight but are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"Listen, I want to apologize. I could tell that you were nervous and this date was a really big deal for you. I put all this pressure on you and I'm sorry. I hope you can forgive me."
"Drake, it's okay. Like it's--"
"I was nervous, too. I know you might not believe me when I say this but I'm not that good with... girls. You're just so beautiful and awesome and I've been dying to go on this date with you ever since I met you. I like you, Debra, and I know you like me, too."
"Uh..."
Drake silenced Debra by surprisingly cupping her cheeks and laying his lips on hers. Debra was frozen and her eyes were wide open. Kyle got up and walked closer to Debra, caught by surprise when seeing her kiss another guy. Drake pulled away with an enamored smile and opened his eyes to see Debra's face. But he ended up spotting Kyle standing a few feet behind her.
"Oh, hey, Kyle," Drake waved. "What are you doing here?"
"Oh, I just stopped by to drop off Debra's notebook," Kyle answered awkwardly. "She forgot it in English."
"Oh." Drake then asked Debra, "Are your lips swollen? They seem bigger than before."
"Oh, I'm not sure but something's swelling, alright," Debra nervously said, feeling her back getting stabbed with Kyle's daggers for eyes.

The Worst Date (Chapter 4)

Later that night, Drake arrived at Debra's home to pick her up. He text-messaged her to come out so Debra put on a coat to keep her dad from seeing her sexy red dress. She exited the bungalow and got into Drake's white Honda. Lizzie left Debra's home after Drake drove off his date to Red Lobster. Before they knew it, Drake and Debra were sitting across from each other at a booth for four, waiting for the waiter to get them their drinks. For a while, Debra's eye makeup had been bothering her. She kept blinking, especially with one eye, as the golden eyeshadow and black eyeliner were irritating her left eye. Drake, of course, noticed it and felt a bit concerned.
    "Are you okay?" he asked.
    "Mm-hmm, yep," Debra replied.
"Are you sure? You can't stop blinking your eye."
"I'm not blinking. I'm winking. I'm winking at you."
    "Okay."
Debra did not want to mess up her eye makeup but she wanted to stop blinking, too. So she put her head down and squeezed her eyes shut for a few seconds. Then she opened them and blinked a few times until the irritation went away.
"You look really amazing," Drake remarked, noticing her lacy cherry-colored frock.
    "Thank you."
"Sorry if I stare at you all night."
    "It's okay."
    "So how's school for you?"
    "It's good."
    "Just good?"
    "And nice."
"Okay. I think school is good and nice, too. I've been having problems in Italian class. It used to be really easy for me but now, it's getting hard. I don't know what happened. But I'm trying my best and I hope something good comes along. What language do you take?"
    "Latin."
"Oh, that's interesting. Is it hard?"
    "No."
"Okay, what do you like about it?"
    "It's fun."
    "It's fun?"
    "Yes."
    "Alright then."
Soon, the waiter arrived with a tray of two glasses filled with ice water.
"Here are your drinks," he said, putting the drinks down on the table.
    "Thank you, man," said Drake.
"Are you two ready to order?"
    "I am. Are you, Debra?"
    "Yes," Debra answered.
"Okay." Drake picked up his menu and flipped a few pages. Debra did the same. "Uh, I want to have the Chicken Parmesan but are you fine with me eating meat in front of you?"
    "Of course."
"Cool. I'll have the Chicken Parmesan, then."
"Good," said the waiter, writing the order down on his notepad. "And what will you have, Miss?"
Debra looked at her menu. "I will have the Caesar salad."
The waiter scribbled it down. "Okay. With black pepper?"
    "Yeah."
"Alright. Your food will be served in less than a hour."
"Thank you, man," Drake said before the waiter walked away. "So when you did decide that you were going to be a vegetarian?" he asked Debra.
"When I was five," she answered.
"Why did you want to become one?"
    "I like animals."
Drake nodded, waiting for more to that answer. "Okay. I like animals, too, but I don't know. I just like... eating them... not to sound like a cannibal."
    "You don't."
"It's just that my family had a thing for cooking lots of meat so I grew up eating it and you know... liking it."
    "Okay."
    "But I appreciate that you're a vegetarian. I think that's cool."
"Thank you." Debra pushed her gold thin bracelets up and down her arm in a way that looked a little weird and excessive.
"Um, I eat a lot of vegetables actually. Practically more than I eat meat. I like to stay healthy and fit so I can go surfing."
    "Okay."
    "Do you surf?"
    "No, I don't."
    "Are you interested in surfing?"
    "No, I'm not."
"Okay. Do you want to watch me surf sometime?"
    "Yes, I want to."
    "Okay. Cool."
Excessively, Debra twisted her big ruby earring back and forth. Drake just stared with an expressionless look on her face until she stopped playing with her earring. Then Debra remembered: Lizzie told her, "Guys like sports and Megan Fox." So she asked Drake:
"Do you know if Megan Fox also surfs?"
"Uh, I don't know. I don't think so. Are you a Megan Fox fan?"
    "No, I'm not."
"Oh, okay. Finally, a question came out of your mouth."
Debra giggled, almost awkwardly, while pushing her bracelets up and down her arm like a crazy person. She eventually stopped laughing and kept still. Drake was utterly confused.
"Are you sure you're okay?" he asked again.
    "Yes, I'm sure."
    "You're not nervous or anything?"
    "No, I'm not nervous."
"Okay, just making sure. God, you look beautiful."
Debra grinned, flipping her short hair with both hands for each side.
"I'm sorry. I just had to say it."
    "It's okay."
"I've never seen you look like this. I mean you're pretty every day, no matter what you look like. But right now, I cannot take my eyes off of you."
"Oh, stop, Drake," Debra said in a successfully flirty voice while batting her dark, full eyelashes at him. Then her flirtatious batting transitioned into wild blinking as her makeup started to irritate her eye again.
Drake's smile slowly faded away as he changed his facial expression. Debra squeezed her eyes shut again then opened them. She did it again then opened them. She blinked until her eyes weren't bothered anymore.
"Do you have something in your eye?" questioned Drake.
"Yes, I do," responded Debra. Her eyes began running with black makeup. "And that's you."
Drake chuckled, almost awkwardly. "So... I can't wait to eat that Chicken Parmesan. I haven't eaten since four O'clock."
    "Okay."
"I could hardly eat while thinking about this date. This... very interesting date."
"Aw, Drake." Debra played her earrings again.
    "Do you need a tissue?"
    "Why?"
"You just appear to be... crying."
"Oh, no, I'm not crying. What?"
"Your makeup is running down your face."
"Oh!" Debra wiped under her eyes until her face was dry. The black wetness was off but the lower lids of her eyes were smudged. "Did I get it?" she asked before quickly realizing that one of her bracelets got caught on her ruby earring.
    "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." Debra attempted to yank her arm off of her earring a few times. The last time hurt her, making her say, "Ow!"
    "Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure. I just love this earring." She tried to make it look like she was twirling her earring again. After another yank, she scratched her eye, causing her to blink excessively once more. "I gotta go to the bathroom," she said, sliding out of her seat.
Almost out of nowhere, the waiter came back with two trays of the couple's desired meals. "Your food has arrived," he announced.
Hearing his voice startled Debra a bit and she began wobbling in her floral heels. Her right foot bent down in front of her other foot which caused her to lose her balance and uncontrollably back up. She bumped into the table with her back and stumbled down. She put her arm on the table to pick herself up but she accidentally hit her glass of water. The glass got knocked over and spilled cold water and ice everywhere, especially on Debra, chilling her back and wetting her dress. The glass even began rolling off the table until it hit Debra on the head, knocking her down flat on the floor. The waiter backed up when he saw the action unravel. When Debra fell, she got the bracelet off of her earring. Drake sprang out of his seat and rushed over to Debra to console her.
"Debra, are you alright?" he asked, lifting her up by the arm.
Luckily for her, Debra regained her vision. Yet unluckily for her, she accidentally let one rip, loud enough for a bunch of people at the restaurant to hear. Drake didn't know how to respond so he kept silent. Laughter was heard in the background.
Embarrassed, Debra's face reddened. "I got to go." She got up by herself and began running out of the restaurant.

The Worst Date (Chapter 3)

On a Saturday night, Debra tried to get started preparing herself for her date with the gorgeous Drake. Lizzie remembered to come over Debra's house and arrived at the perfect time... almost. Debra's father let the girl in and Lizzie made her way to Debra's bedroom, catching a glimpse of Debra pacing around in a shapeless white dress. Debra stopped when she saw her friend.
"Hey, hey, hey, Debra!" greeted Lizzie.
"Hey, Lizzie," Debra greeted back. "Thank goodness you're here."
"Well, you told me to come here. I almost forgot but then I remembered. Then I forgot and then I remembered again."
"Well, at least you're here, that's all that matters. I don't think I could leave if you weren't here."
"Debra, it's just a date. The best compliment to someone you like is showing up."
"It is?"
"Yeah. And also calling them 'The Abominable Snowman of Extreme Hotness'."
Debra nodded in an unsure way. "Right."
"Why are you still in your PJ's?"
Debra looked down at her outfit. "This is what I'm going to wear for my date."
"Oh. Oh! It's pretty! It's even prettier at night. And by 'night', I mean 'the night when we go to sleep'."
"Well, what should I wear?"
"Let me see."
Lizzie went after the small closet in the room and opened the door. She rummaged through every dress in the closet with hopes of finding the perfect one. Yet she didn't see anything special. She turned around and said:
"I don't know. Do you have a sexy dress?"
"I don't think so."
"Oh, Debbie! Guys won't pay attention to us unless we wear a sexy dress."
"They won't?"
"No. I mean they pay attention to us now because we're pretty and fun and happy. But when we wear a Kim Kardashian dress, they won't take their eyes off of us ever. And extended eye contact is good, especially if he has a condition in which he can't close his eyes."
"Okay. Then what will I wear?"
"Oh, I know!" Lizzie put down the purse she was carrying on the bed. She unzipped it and pulled out a long, red, satin dress from it like a magician doing a magic trick. "You can wear this."
"Why do you have a dress in your purse?"
"I was going to see DeMarcus later anyway and I wanted to wear this around him. Can you believe it? He likes red just like me! He also likes purple and green and orange and--"
"Why do you want me to wear it?"
"Oh, because this is your first dinner date and it has to be special. What's more special than wearing the dress the guy of your dreams won't take his eyes off of? Plus, DeMarcus doesn't really care what I wear. He closes his eyes when he kisses me anyway."
"Well, I appreciate it, Lizzie."
Lizzie handed the sensual lacy dress to Debra who admired it in her hands.
"Ooh, do you have any heels?" asked Lizzie.
"I sure do." Debra walked over to her closet and bent down to pick up a pair of tan-colored, chunky sandals with a thick heel. She popped up and showed the shoes to Lizzie.
"Those are hippie heels."
"Hippie heels?"
"I mean they're perfect for a walk on the sidewalk and other flat grounds. They go with anything, except for this dress."
"Oh, well, the rest of my heels look like these."
"That's okay. You can wear my heels." Lizzie took off the floral printed heels from her feet and handed them to her friend.
"Aren't you going to be barefoot?"
"Oh, no, I have plenty of heels in my car. You know that."
"Oh, yeah. Thank you."
"No problem. I'd give you my bra if I have to. Do you think you will need it?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"A guy should like me for me, not my breasts."
"That's the spirit."
"I'm proud of being flat chested."
"I'm proud of being short. No, I'm lying; I still have a little problem with it. But I'm eighteen. I won't stop growing until I'm forty-six anyway."
"Yuh-huh." Debra examined the shoes she held with one hand. "Lizzie, these heels seem a bit high."
"Of course they are. I'm short. I don't think I can walk on the ground properly without having heels on. Just walk with your toes and you'll be fine."
"Okay."
"Now I'm gonna teach you how to have a conversation with a guy. Of course, you can talk about cakes with him because guys like cakes. But guys like other things like sports and Megan Fox. I remember when I first started dating: I didn't have to flirt because guys would like me anyway. But I learned a little something-something during my experience. You should flip your hair a lot. Guys love long hair." Lizzie focused on Debra's naturally short hair and began combing the red waves with her fingers to check if that was their original length. "Is that how long your hair will grow?"
Debra looked away for a second. "Yes."
"Do you have a wig?"
"No."
"Okay, then try to flip your imaginary long hair. Imagination is key. Also, move your hands when you're talking like you're trying to swat a fly that you want to stay and go away at the same time." Lizzie gestured for demonstration. "Maybe play with your bracelets and earrings. Playing is fun and guys love fun! Also, bat your eyelashes when he gives you a compliment or ask you an embarrassing question. It will make you look shy... I think. And if he asks you a real question, just give him a short answer but still be descriptive. For some reason, guys doesn't like to hear us talk, which I think is B.C., but sometimes they don't listen. Although that is very hurtful, we still have to talk to them because how else are we going to reproduce? Not that I'm trying to reproduce; I'm waiting until marriage. And I heard that sometimes the babies will come out of your belly button and I really like my innie so I still have to do some thinking on that."
"I have a question."
"Sure, Debbie."
"How come when I'm totally myself when I go on casual dates with guys, it seems to work? But on this dinner date, I have to do a bunch of other stuff?"
"Because sometimes you have to trick a guy into liking you. When he finally does, you trap him. Besides, dinner dates are supposed to be romantic. Romance is important. You can go on a casual date with your mother which is not that special because you see your mom every day. Every day is a casual date. You don't see Drake every day but when you see him tonight, it has to be special so he can continue to like you."
"I don't see my mom every day."
"And don't talk to them about parental issues. That's something you bring up on the second or third date. I think guys don't want to hear it immediately because of that theory by... Siegfried Fraud? You know, the scientist. So be flirty, be playful, keep it short and-- Oh! Don't order meat. You can't eat meat in front of a boy."
"I don't eat meat."
"Good! See? You're already catching on! Now I got to do your makeup."
"Let me guess: guys like makeup, too?"
"Now you're thinking! You're gonna kill this date!"

The Worst Date (Chapter 2)

The next day, the school day ended, freeing all of the teenagers who desired strongly to get out of the "prison". The girls took their time leaving. Four of them met up and made their way to find Debra by heading for where her locker was. They found her there, stuffing books into her backpack. They stopped and stared until Andrea called her name to grab attention from her.
                "Debra!"
Debra turned her head. "Oh, hello, my friends." She zipped up her bag. "I heard some sparkly spectacular news I'd like to share with you."
"What is it?" asked Madeline. "Is it sparkly spectacular?"
Debra put on her backpack and began walking with her friends. She started:
"Well, I was speaking to Drake today and he told me that he didn't want to come over my house."
"Why is that good?" asked Lizzie.
"Because he then said that he wanted to pick me up from it so he could take me to dinner."
                "Oh, sparkly spectacular!"
"He asked you out on a date?" asked Madeline.
"Yepperino. To be honest with you girls, I had my doubts because I thought he didn't like me in that way. But all I had to do was believe in myself and--"
She was interrupted by her friend, Kyle, a male of Asian descent with purple dyed hair and wearing a black motorcycle jacket, who stopped right in front of her. The girls stopped when Debra stopped.
                "Hey, Debra," he said.
"Oh, hi, Kyle," Debra greeted back. "How is it hanging?"
"My club is having a poetry slam over the weekend and I would like it if you came."
"Oh, I'm honored, Kyle, but I have plans this weekend."
"You don't think you'll be able to make it?"
"No, I'm really sorry. Maybe next time."
The girls walked past Kyle who just stood there and sighed out of disappointment.
"So where are you and Drake going to go?" asked Madeline.
"Drake recommended Red Lobster," Debra replied.
"I heard there are actual red lobsters at that place," shared Lizzie.
                "Yes, Lizzie, yes."
"What are you going to wear?" asked Andrea.
"I don't know. Something like what I have on?" Debra was wearing a white poncho, ripped blue jeans and cowboy boots.
"Debbie, it's Red Lobster," reminded Madeline. "Not Red Rodeo."
"And while you're at the restaurant, you should order an expensive meal and see if he pays for it," said Lizzie.
"Why would he pay for my meal?" questioned Debra. "I can pay for it myself. And the money I have, my meal's not gonna be expensive."
"Oh, my God, Debra," Madeline faced her hands to the sides of her face as if she was going to touch her temples.
"Have you been on a dinner date before?" asked Skye.
"I've been on plenty of casual dates," answered Debra.
"Hold up, chica," said Andrea. "You're telling us that you never gone out with a boy to a place where you had to wear suits and dresses?"
                "No. Never."
                "Girl, bye."
"We have to teach you how to go on this date," said Madeline.
"Girls, it's a date," said Debra. "I don't think I have to be taught how to go on one. If Drake sees the free spirit in me every day, then can't I be that for our date?"
"Because sometimes, you have to be something you're not. That's just life."
"But you guys said I don't have to ever change."
"And we mean that. But when it comes to dates, now and then, you got to trade the pants for a dress."
"And wear heavier makeup," added Andrea.
"And put padding in your bra," said Skye, as a joke.
"Guys, stop," Debra ordered. "You're all freaking me out. Now I'm overwhelmed."
"Then breathe," commanded Madeline. "Listen, if you need help going on this date, then we'll be there for you."
"Honestly, I just want Lizzie to help me out."
                "Why?" asked Andrea.
"Because she'll make it more fun."
"So you're saying we're not fun?" questioned Madeline.
"No, of course you guys are fun. But Skye is going to make this all scary and I know you two are going to take it very seriously. Lizzie doesn't take much things seriously."
"Yay, I'm not serious!" Lizzie cheered.
                "See that? That's fun."
"I can be fun, too," said Madeline. She paused before uttering blandly, "Yay."
                "That 'yay' wasn't fun."

"Well, this is not a 'yay' contest. Alright, Debra?"

The Worst Date (Chapter 1)

"I'm having constipation problems again," Lizzie acknowledged.
Skye dropped her plastic spoon in the chocolate frozen yogurt that she was about to eat.
"How do you know, Liz'?" queried Madeline.
"Well, there has been days where my mind and I wanted to... do the doo-doo. But my body just won't let me. I mean my body wants to; it's just my butt is like, 'No way, man.'"
"Your butt talks?" Skye asked jokingly.
"In my dreams, they do."
Skye made a face.
"You just probably need extra fiber, that's all," Madeline deduced. "It makes it very slippery and easy."
Andrea began to say, "If you want things to be slippery and easy, you can always butter--"
"Shut up, Andy!"
Skye laughed while playing with her spoon.
"How do I know something has fiber in it?" asked Lizzie. "Do I have to read the square of nutrition facts on the side of whatever I eat?"
"That would be helpful," agreed Madeline.
"Oh, my mom told me that some of my clothes have fiber in them. Should I try to eat that?"
"I don't think fiber in her clothing can be ingested, Honey."
"Oh, here comes my boyfriend. Don't tell him I'm having constipation problems."
Lizzie's dashing boyfriend, DeMarcus, made his way to the lunch table. He sat down right next to the grinning Lizzie. He put his arm around her and kissed her on the cheek.
"Hey, babe, how are you?" he sweetly asked.
"I'm fine," she said. "I'm not having constipation problems."
Madeline smacked her head with the palm of her hand as DeMarcus made an expression of confusion.
"Debbie, what you looking at?" Andrea asked her friend who was staring hard behind herself.
Debra turned her attention towards her friends. "Oh, nothing."
"Something," said Madeline nosily. "Tell us."
"I'm trying to get Drake to see me."
"Drake from your math class?"
"Yes, that Drake."
"Why don't you go talk to him?" recommended Andrea.
"I've talked to him before."
"Then talk to him again," said Madeline.
"Come on, Debra," Lizzie egged her on.
"You can do it, Debbie," encouraged Skye.
"Alright," Debra smiled. She began to stand up.
"Ain't it like society to lose a sister to white magic," DeMarcus commented.
Debra crinkled her forehead then relaxed herself. She was very good at doing that. Drake was all the way in the back of the cafeteria, in a line for school-provided lunch. So Debra marched towards him in the widest space of the room. He was the last one in line so she didn't have to cut in front of anybody. She tapped him on the shoulder, catching his attention.
"Hi," she waved.
"Hey," Drake bashfully smiled.
"What are you doing?"
Drake scrunched his forehead. "Getting food," he awkwardly chuckled.
"Of course! I knew that. Sorry, it was a stupid question."
"Okay."
"I don't eat the lunch here. It's mostly meat. I don't eat meat."
"Oh, I didn't know that."
"Well... now you know!" She chuckled, eventually realizing that she was losing her cool. His blue eyes and blond hair was making her nervous. She calmed herself down then let the words flow. "I bring food from home and eat it here since my food is more organic."
"Oh, I don't usually bring food with me. I just pay for it."
"Well, a home meal is cheaper."
"I should try it sometime."
"You should. If you want advice -- if you don't, I will give it to you anyway -- you should bring a sandwich, a bottle of water and a pair of Tasty Kakes like what I bring."
"I don't have Tasty Kakes."
"Oh, I do. I have tons of them."
"Cool. I like Tasty Kakes."
"Me, too. They're like petit fours but they're not. Maybe you should come over my house sometime and I'll give you one."
"Okay. Sure."
"Okay. Well, then... bye!"
She waved to him and walked off, ending the conversation. Drake scrunched his forehead again but then laughed if off. Debra walked back to her table and sat down in her original spot.
"What did you say?" asked Andrea.
"What did you guys talk about?" asked Madeline.
"We talked about food," answered Debra. "Especially Tasty Kakes."
Madeline made a weird face. "Why?"
"Because I have tons of them."

"Yep!" Debra raised her shoulders then dropped them down. "Man, I feel so free like a kid after taking a dump."
Skye stabbed her spoon into her melting frozen treat. "You guys really don't want me to eat this, do you?"
