Girls Like Enemies (Chapter 5)

The following day, Mr. Emerson told the students to finish the projects on organic chemistry. Randall did most of the work for the project for almost fifteen minutes. Andrea was too depressed to do anything. She knew that Randall loathed her but she was bothered that Randall wasn't going to stop loathing her. There was nothing for her to do since everything she did upset him. Randall began to notice Andrea's lack of provision.
"Andrea, aren't you going to do something?" he asked.
"No," Andrea moaned.
"Why not?"
"'Cause nothing I ever do pleases you."
"But it would be nice if you help me."
"Nice?" She stood up straight from her slouching state. "I've tried to be nice to you but you, for some reason, won't reciprocate."
"It's not my job to reciprocate."
"But don't you have any manners? Like, you can't appreciate anything, even the smallest things. I can't work with you anymore."
"Oh, please, we've tried that already. It didn't work."
"Who cares? I can't work with you anymore. Look, your 'girlfriend', Leslie, is back so you can go ahead and work with her. She's practically the only person who doesn't irritate you anyway."
"She irritates me a little bit."
"It doesn't matter. You two are smart so you work better together. I'm just some dumb, violent girl who doesn't know how to do anything."
"That's nonsense. It's not like you're handicapped or anything."
"But if I was, you'd still treat me the same. So why don't go and work with Leslie so you don't have to look at my dumb, ugly face ever again?"
"I should if you're gonna act all suicidal about it."
"Randall, you called me an idiot and ugly so it's not like I'm talking crazy. I'm just done trying to make you not hate me."
"Andrea, I-- Listen, I know we don't get along well. To be honest, you do have your dumb moments but you're not dumb at all. You're actually smart, just not as smart as me."
"Are you trying to make me feel better?"
"Be quiet. Anyway, I don't hate you. I dislike you but I can never hate you. It's not like you're a terrorist or anything. You just got flaws. But so do I. I'm not perfect; I have temper problems for crying out loud. So the reason we don't get along is because of me. When I met you, you were nice but I wasn't. I apologize for that. I would also like to apologize for calling you 'ugly'. You are a beautiful woman and maybe I said that out of anger. But just because I call you names and whatnot does not mean that I mean them."
"You think I'm beautiful?" Andrea slowly smiled.
"Yes. Wait, what? No. I mean yes but... You know what I mean."
"Yeah, I do."
"So can we go back to work... please?"
"Of course."
"Thank you."
Andrea reached for the instructions and grabbed them to read them as Randall used a pipette to drip its contents into a small glass beaker.
"So are we, like, friends now?" Andrea asked.
Randall scoffed. "I'm not gonna go to your quinceaƱera or anything."
"I already had my quinceaƱera."
"Look, I don't know what Spanish people do."
"Hey, screw you, Alison Hannigan!"
"Shut up, you messed-up looking Ricky Martin!"
"Okay, we're back to normal."

Girls Like Enemies (Chapter 4)

After her new knowledge failed to win over her crush, Andrea sought more help from her friends. They told her if her brains didn't work, use her body and see what happens. So the next day, when chemistry class started, Andrea walked in, looking more beautiful than she usually does. She was wearing an off-the-shoulder, tight black dress that stopped above her knees. She also wore wooden sandal wedges with black straps and golden hoop earrings. Her hair was straight which made her seem more different because she always wore her glossy brown hair in curls. And she had on blurred black eyeshadow to create smoky eyes. Lastly, she had on nude lipstick and pink lip gloss. Basically, she looked like a hot celebrity. The boys who were already in class couldn't take their eyes off of Andrea. When the bell rang, the only guy who wasn't looking was Randall.
Mister Emerson, the chemistry teacher, entered the classroom and closed the door. When he walked behind his long desk, he glanced at Andrea, who sat in the front row of desks. His glance turned into a stare.
"Andrea, you're all dressed up," he noticed. "What's the occasion?"
"No occasion," smiled Andrea. "I just thought it was necessary to look nice today."
"Well, you look hot... Not that I'm staring. Because you know, you're a child and I'm a teacher."
"I'm eighteen years old, Mister Emerson."
"Oh, thank God... that it's Thursday. Do me a favor, Andrea, and not dress like this ever in my class again?"
"Sure, Mister Emerson."
"Thank you. Okay, class, I got a new assignment. It is all explained on the papers at your assigned counters. Be gone now!"
The students got up and assembled with their lab partners. Andrea sashayed up to her counter while Randall made his way over. Andrea leaned against the counter with a smile on her face and her eyes starving for her crush. But Randall's eyes were more cranky than starving.
"Aren't you gonna read the assignment?" he asked.
Andrea picked up the paper on the counter and handed it to Randall. "Why don't you read it for me?"
Randall snatched the paper from her hand. "I know you didn't lose your eyesight in one day."
"Just read it."
As Randall read from the paper, Andrea moved closer to him. "'Your assignment is to figure out what organic chemistry is all about'. They should've taught us this before we went the inorganic way. But this should be easy. We need goggles."
"Can you go fetch us some goggles, please?" Andrea asked seductively, leaning on the counter.
"Why don't you get your own?"
"Just get the freakin' goggles," she said through her teeth.
Randall sighed. "Fine." He left to retrieve two pairs of goggles from the cabinet. After coming back, he threw a pair at Andrea, which she caught.
"Thank you."
"Yeah, yeah." Randall set his eyes on the paper.
"You enjoyin' what you seein'?"
Randall looked up. "Can you not bug me? We have work to do."
"Of course. We have... work to do." Andrea bent over the counter and rested her elbows. "Is there any work you'd like me to do?" She stood up straight and stretched, showing how lithe her body is.
"Listen, I don't want any of the candy you're selling. Okay?"
Andrea paused. "Did you just call me a hooker?"
"Well, if the fat lady sings..."
"I'm not fat either."
"Look, Andrea, just put the substance in the beaker and mix the white balls in. Can you do that?"
"I most certainly can."
"Good."
"Good!"
Andrea was so angry. What could she do to get Randall's attention? Following his orders, Andrea looked for the substance to place in the empty, clean beaker. On the counter were three containers, labeled by numbers 1 through three, full of colored liquids. She picked up the container of green liquid named "#1"and popped off the lid. She poured the whole thing in the beaker, not caring how much she was supposed to put in. Randall's eyes were on the sheet of instructions and since Andrea irritated him a bit, he didn't care to look at her. Andrea looked for the white balls, which were in a Ziplock bag labeled, "Specimen #1". She opened the bag and, angrily, one by one, dropped all of the sparkly, little, white balls in the beaker. Eventually, Randall started to look at Andrea.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"I'm putting the white balls in the beaker like you said," Andrea responded with her eyes on the beaker.
"Yeah, but I didn't say put them all in." He snatched the bag from Andrea's hands.
"You weren't specific about how many to put in."
"That's why you should read the instructions, stupid."
"Okay, that's the last time you gon' call me stupid."
The white balls dissolved in the green liquid and made it all fizzy. Then the liquid started bubbling like a shaken soda.
"Great, now the substance is fizzling," Randall noted.
"Well, it's not my fault," said Andrea, throwing her hands in the air.
"Yes, it is!"
"Okay, it is."
The liquid changed from gooey to a foaming consistency and began overflowing out of the beaker.
"We're gonna get in so much trouble," said Randall, picking up the paper.
"Let's just soak it all up with some napkins," Andrea recommended.
"If we use napkins, they'll burn, cake face."
"Cake face?"
"You got a bunch of makeup on your face."
"So what? I don't know how to put on makeup?"
"Well, I know your face isn't supposed to look like frosting."
"Sorry for looking nice. I think I look nice this way."
"Oh, please. You look like somebody dropped you off on the street."
"Hey, I know you insult me every day but that really hurts my feelings."
"Like you have feelings. If you did, you'd care about projects like this and not mess them up."
"I'm sorry, Ronald McDonald. Look, why don't you just use a cup?" Andrea picked up a glass cup from the side and placed it next to the flooding beaker.
"A cup is not going to work, genius." Randall reached over and attempted to grab the cup.
Him and Andrea began fighting over the cup and eventually, Randall got a hold of it. Andrea pushed him, making him touch the countertop, which was covering in green foam. Randall leaped up and held his wrist.
"Ah!" he screamed. "You burned my hand again!"
"Well, I'm sorry that you're so clumsy," Andrea shouted.
"God, Andrea! You ruin everything!"
Randall walked away with all eyes on him. Andrea just stood there, feeling bad, not just for him but for herself. Everything from her brains to her body didn't work and she was afraid that nothing would ever work.

Girls Like Enemies (Chapter 3)

For a week, Andrea tried to teach herself everything to know about chemistry. She took notes from her textbook, read articles on the internet and only watched movies that used science. When those seven days were up, her brain was stuffed with as much knowledge as she could remember regarding chemistry. She was so ready to use it when she got to class.
For AP chemistry, Andrea wore hipster glasses without the prescription to appear smarter. She also wore her hair in a ponytail. When the class had to do another hands-on project, Andrea hoped that her brain could help attract the attention of Randall in a positive light.
"What does Step Two say?" asked Randall after turning on the burner on the counter.
Andrea picked up the laminated paper of instructions. "It says to add the sodium chloride to the hot water."
Randall reached for the box that contained various elements. He picked up a tiny spoon and scooped the element in the section of the box titled, "NaCl". He proceeded to dump the element in the water-filled beaker.
"Did you know that sodium chloride is basically salt?" asked Andrea.
"Am I wet behind the ears?" Randall asked, all snarky.
"No, you're dry."
"Good to know." Randall picked up a swizzle stick and started stirring the water. "Okay, what's next?"
"'Step Three: Add the element labeled 'Mystery One' to the water mixture.'"
"Okay." Randall cleaned the tiny spoon with a ripped up paper towel. He then scooped the element in the box under "Mystery 1" with the spoon and dumped it in the water.
"Do you think Mystery One is silver nitrate?" asked Andrea.
"Do you even know what you're saying?" Randall asked back.
"Of course. If that's silver nitrate, it would make a double-replacement reaction since it's interacting with the sodium chloride."
"You don't say."
"I do say. And the ions of the two compounds trade places to make two new compounds while they're in water."
"Tell me something I don't know, Andrea."
"Well, what don't you know?"
"Andrea, I don't have time to play games. We're supposed to do a project and this is what we shall do."
"We are doing it, Randall. I thought that it would be cool to share with you what I know about chemistry. Did you know that the primary component of marble is calcium carbonate?"
"Yes."
"Okay, that's something you do know. But what don't you know?"
"Andrea, this is work time. Can you shut up and work?"
Andrea scowled. "Fine, Isaac Newton."
Randall chuckled. "Isaac Newton? Really? He did physics, not chemistry, you idiot."
"I know you are but what am I?" She couldn't think of a good insult to say.

Girls Like Enemies (Chapter 2)

"Just taste it," DeMarcus, Lizzie's boyfriend, commanded.
"No," Lizzie responded.
"Come on, it's good."
"I don't want to taste it."
"So you're just gonna sit here and not eat?"
"It's fine."
"Babe, it's good. I'm not lying."
"Are you sure?"
"Positive. One bite and I'll leave you alone."
"You're pushy."
"It's only because I don't want you to starve. You think I want to sit here and watch you die?"
"I'm not dying."
"You're dying if you're not eating."
"Well, if that's the case, give me a bite."
"Alright." DeMarcus picked up a lump of the ground beef on his lunch tray with his spork and started feeding it to Lizzie.
"Mmm!" she hummed, licking her lips. "That is good!"
"I told you."
"It's like hamburger soup."
"It kinda is hamburger soup."
"Well, you weren't lying."
"I told you. Okay, that's all I wanted."
"Wait! I want some more."
"You want some more?"
"Yeah."
"Then let me give you some more, girl." DeMarcus scooped up the beef again and fed it to his girlfriend.
"I'm dying," said Skye flatly.
"I can't believe you guys are grubbing on mock Hamburger Helper," said Madeline.
"But it's so good," Lizzie commented, muffled.
"You guys should pack a fresh lunch like I always do." She waved her hands at the packed lunch she took out of her bag.
"How do you know it's fresh?" asked Andrea. "How do you know your mom is not buying that stuff just to kill you?"
"She goes to the best grocery stores in town."
"The best or the 'meh, good' ones?"
"They're the best. Trust me."
"So can you guys help me with something?"
"Sure, Andy," responded Debra. "What's the situation?"
"You know how I... like Randall, right?"
"Of course," replied Skye. "Your knight in shining armor."
"Please, he would not be able to fit in that armor."
"Are you asking us to help you get him?" asked Madeline.
"I guess so."
"Yay!" Lizzie cheered, clapping. "Makeover!"
"Oh, no. The last time you gave someone a makeover, Debra had two boyfriends."
"You did, too," reminded Madeline, "so how would she make it worse?"
"You got me there. Look, every since I realized that I liked Randall, I just couldn't be myself around him. On a normal day, we're bickering and insulting each other. Now, I can't seem to make up a comeback for him. It's getting pathetic. He's gonna know I like him one day and when he does, he's gonna stop dealing with me."
"So you need him to like you before he knows you like him?" questioned Debra.
"Exactly."
"I feel like that's easy," said Skye. "Randall is all smart and everything, correct?"
"Yeah, he's pretty smart."
"No smarter than me," shared Madeline.
"Cool it, Palin," said Skye. "So for you to win him over, just be smart."
"I am smart," Andrea defended.
"I mean smarter than how you already are."
"Whoa, how do I do that?"
"I don't know. Study more? Pay more attention in class? Read a book?"
"Okay, I get it."
"Watch the Science Channel?"
"I said I get it, Skye. I'll do anything to win Randall's heart. Anything to be like DeMarcus and Lizzie."
"You wanna feed each other gross school Hamburger Helper?"
"It's good!" said Lizzie.
"So good," DeMarcus added.
"I'm sure it is," Skye said, laughing.

Girls Like Enemies (Chapter 1)

During the evening in the middle of the week, the girls were in school, receiving their education. Andrea was once again in AP chemistry class, doing another hands-on project with the brainiac Randall Lowe. After discovering that she has feelings for the fiery redhead, Andrea could not cooperate in class like she used to. With the chance she would get to work with her assigned lab partner, Andrea always had a lack of concentration, which ticked Randall off. Suddenly, he seemed more attractive to Andrea and that threw her off. She just wasn't herself around him, at least not anymore.
As Randall poured a flask of red liquid into a heated beaker of a yellow liquid, Andrea could not take her eyes off of him. She was thinking about how her and Randall would possibly even be a couple. He wasn't even her type. A ginger bowl-cut. An army of freckles. Bulb-y nose. Pasty, tiny hands. But her thoughts overcame her and froze her with admiration and wonder.
"Okay, write a description for this," demanded Randall, eyeing the beaker which now contained an orange liquid.
Andrea didn't do anything; she just stared hard at Randall.
Randall looked at her to make sure she was taking notes. "Hello? Did you hear me?"
Andrea started blinking rapidly, as if she was waking up. "Uh, no. What did you say?"
"I said, loudly and clearly, to write a description of this."
"Oh, of course." Andrea picked up her pencil and started scribbling on the chart on the paper. She looked up when she was finished.
"What did you write?"
"On the paper?"
"Yes." Randall was getting more irritated.
"Oh, I said that it turned orange."
"Yeah, orange and bubbly like soda."
"Oh, should I write that down?"
"Yes!"
"Okay." Andrea began to write down what Randall said inside the chart.
"Now I am going to add the blue balls." Randall reached for the plastic bag of little blue-colored spheres. He opened it and picked three balls. Then carefully, he dropped them into the beaker. The balls quickly dissolved into the liquid and turned it brown. "Okay, write a description of that."
Andrea didn't do anything again. She was, once again, staring at her crush with lost eyes.
Randall looked at Andrea and glared at her. "Earth to Andrea!"
Andrea flinched. "What? Sorry."
"Didn't you hear what I said?"
"No."
"God, are you on crack?"
"No!"
"Then stop behaving so bizarre. I swear, in the past few weeks, you've been acting strange. Stranger than how you usually act."
"I'm sorry. There's just a lot on my mind."
"Well, get this: you're in school which is not the place to have so much on your mind. So I suggest that you pay attention and do this stupid project with me so we can be done."
"Shut up, you... hooligan."
"Is that the best you can do?"
"I don't know," Andrea mumbled.
"Just stop being a brat and help me out."
"You know, you are such a... uh... well, yeah, you know what you are."
"Ooh, burn," Randall said sarcastically.
Andrea squinted her eyes at him and shook her head.
